No Escape From Black Holes? Stephen Hawking Points to a Possible Exit

Credit: Brian Stauffer

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — “A black hole has no hair.”

That mysterious, koan-like statement by the theorist and legendary phrasemaker John Archibald Wheeler of Princeton has stood for half a century as one of the brute pillars of modern physics.

It describes the ability of nature, according to classical gravitational equations, to obliterate most of the attributes and properties of anything that falls into a black hole, playing havoc with science’s ability to predict the future and tearing at our understanding of how the universe works.

Now it seems that statement might be wrong.

Recently Stephen Hawking, who has spent his entire career battling a form of Lou Gehrig’s disease, wheeled across the stage in Harvard’s hoary, wood-paneled Sanders Theater to do battle with the black hole. It is one of the most fearsome demons ever conjured by science, and one partly of his own making: a cosmic pit so deep and dense and endless that it was long thought that nothing — not even light, not even a thought — could ever escape.

But Dr. Hawking was there to tell us not to be so afraid.

In a paper to be published this week in Physical Review Letters, Dr. Hawking and his colleagues Andrew Strominger of Harvard and Malcolm Perry of Cambridge University in England say they have found a clue pointing the way out of black holes.

“They are not the eternal prisons they were once thought,” Dr. Hawking said in his famous robot voice, now processed through a synthesizer. “If you feel you are trapped in a black hole, don’t give up. There is a way out.”

Black holes are the most ominous prediction of Einstein’s general theory of relativity: Too much matter or energy concentrated in one place would cause space to give way, swallowing everything inside like a magician’s cloak.

An eternal prison was the only metaphor scientists had for these monsters until 40 years ago, when Dr. Hawking turned black holes upside down — or perhaps inside out. His equations showed that black holes would not last forever. Over time, they would “leak” and then explode in a fountain of radiation and particles.

Ever since, the burning question in physics has been: When the black hole finally goes, does it give up the secrets of everything that fell in?

Dr. Hawking’s calculation was, and remains, hailed as a breakthrough in understanding the connection between gravity and quantum mechanics, between the fabric of space and the subatomic particles that live inside it — the large and the small in the universe.

But there was a hitch. By Dr. Hawking’s estimation, the radiation coming out of the black hole as it fell apart would be random. As a result, most of the “information” about what had fallen in — all of the attributes and properties of the things sucked in, whether elephants or donkeys, Volkswagens or Cadillacs — would be erased.

In a riposte to Einstein’s famous remark that God does not play dice, Dr. Hawking said in 1976, “God not only plays dice with the universe, but sometimes throws them where they can’t be seen.”

But his calculation violated a tenet of modern physics: that it is always possible in theory to reverse time, run the proverbial film backward and reconstruct what happened in, say, the collision of two cars or the collapse of a dead star into a black hole.

The universe, like a kind of supercomputer, is supposed to be able to keep track of whether one car was a green pickup truck and the other was a red Porsche, or whether one was made of matter and the other antimatter. These things may be destroyed, but their “information” — their essential physical attributes — should live forever.

In fact, the information seemed to be lost in the black hole, according to Dr. Hawking, as if part of the universe’s memory chip had been erased. According to this theorem, only information about the mass, charge and angular momentum of what went in would survive.

Nothing about whether it was antimatter or matter, male or female, sweet or sour.

A war of words and ideas ensued. The information paradox, as it is known, was no abstruse debate, as Dr. Hawking pointed out from the stage of the Sanders Theater in April. Rather, it challenged foundational beliefs about what reality is and how it works.

If the rules break down in black holes, they may be lost in other places as well, he warned. If foundational information disappears into a gaping maw, the notion of a “past” itself may be in jeopardy — we couldn’t even be sure of our own histories. Our memories could be illusions.

“It’s the past that tells us who we are. Without it we lose our identity,” he said.

Fortunately for historians, Dr. Hawking conceded defeat in the black hole information debate 10 years ago, admitting that advances in string theory, the so-called theory of everything, had left no room in the universe for information loss.

At least in principle, then, he agreed, information is always preserved — even in the smoke and ashes when you, say, burn a book. With the right calculations, you should be able reconstruct the patterns of ink, the text.

Dr. Hawking paid off a bet with John Preskill, a Caltech physicist, with a baseball encyclopedia, from which information can be easily retrieved.
Not Bald After All

But neither Dr. Hawking nor anybody else was able to come up with a convincing explanation for how that happens and how all this “information” escapes from the deadly erasing clutches of a black hole.

Indeed, a group of physicists four years ago tried to figure it out and suggested controversially that there might be a firewall of energy just inside a black hole that stops anything from getting out or even into a black hole.

The new results do not address that issue. But they do undermine the famous notion that black holes have “no hair” — that they are shorn of the essential properties of the things they have consumed.

About four years ago, Dr. Strominger started noodling around with theoretical studies about gravity dating to the early 1960s. Interpreted in a modern light, the papers — published in 1962 by Hermann Bondi, M. G. J. van der Burg, A. W. K. Metzner and Rainer Sachs, and in 1965 by Steven Weinberg, later a recipient of the Nobel Prize — suggested that gravity was not as ruthless as Dr. Wheeler had said.

Looked at from the right vantage point, black holes might not be not be bald at all.

The right vantage point is not from a great distance in space — the normal assumption in theoretical calculations — but from a far distance in time, the far future, technically known as “null infinity.”

“Null infinity is where light rays go if they are not trapped in a black hole,” Dr. Strominger tried to explain over coffee in Harvard Square recently.

From this point of view, you can think of light rays on the surface of a black hole as a bundle of straws all pointing outward, trying to fly away at the speed of, of course, light. Because of the black hole’s immense gravity, they are stuck.

But the individual straws can slide inward or outward along their futile tracks, slightly advancing or falling back, under the influence of incoming material. When a particle falls into a black hole, it slides the straws of light back and forth, a process called a supertranslation.

That leaves a telltale pattern on the horizon, the invisible boundary that is the point of no return of a black hole — a halo of “soft hair,” as Dr. Strominger and his colleagues put it. That pattern, like the pixels on your iPhone or the wavy grooves in a vinyl record, contains information about what has passed through the horizon and disappeared.

“One often hears that black holes have no hair,” Dr. Strominger and a postdoctoral researcher, Alexander Zhiboedov, wrote in a 2014 paper. Not true: “Black holes have a lush infinite head of supertranslation hair.”

Enter Dr. Hawking.

For years, he and Dr. Strominger and a few others had gotten together to work in seclusion at a Texas ranch owned by the oilman and fracking pioneer George P. Mitchell. Because Dr. Hawking was discouraged from flying, in April 2014 the retreat was in Hereford, Britain.

It was there that Dr. Hawking first heard about soft hair — and was very excited. He, Dr. Strominger and Dr. Perry began working together.

In Stockholm that fall, he made a splash when he announced that a resolution to the information paradox was at hand — somewhat to the surprise of Dr. Strominger and Dr. Perry, who has been trying to maintain an understated stance.

Although information gets hopelessly scrambled, Dr. Hawking declared, it “can be recovered in principle, but it is lost for all practical purposes.”

In January, Dr. Hawking, Dr. Strominger and Dr. Perry posted a paper online titled “Soft Hair on Black Holes,” laying out the basic principles of their idea.

In the paper, they are at pains to admit that knocking the pins out from under the no-hair theorem is a far cry from solving the information paradox. But it is progress.

Their work suggests that science has been missing something fundamental about how black holes evaporate, Dr. Strominger said. And now they can sharpen their questions. “I hope we have the tiger by the tail,” he said.

Whether or not soft hair is enough to resolve the information paradox, nobody really knows. Reaction from other physicists has been reserved.

Juan Maldacena of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, N.J., said of the new proposal, “Its significance for the black hole information problem remains to be seen. But it is probable that it plays some role.”
Escape Plans?

Dr. Strominger has serious street cred when it comes to black holes. In a celebrated calculation in 1996, he and Cumrun Vafa computed the information content of a black hole, verifying Dr. Hawking’s famous conjecture that black holes explode.

Their work is still one of the greatest achievements of string theory, the vaunted and yet unproved theory of everything. If this estimate of the content in a black hole matches one made from supertranslations, physicists would arrive at a fundamental, new understanding of how they work.

But Dr. Strominger and Dr. Perry admit that they are not anywhere near doing that yet. In a new paper not yet released, Dr. Strominger said that they had been able to show that information could also be encoded in the twisting of light beams trying to escape from the black hole, not just their sliding back and forth.

At Harvard last month, Dr. Hawking, who has a taste for dramatic statements, doubled down on his Stockholm declaration.

“When I wrote my paper 40 years ago, I thought the information would pass into another universe,” he told me. Now he thinks the information is stored on the black hole’s horizon.

“The information will be re-emitted when the black hole evaporates. My work with my colleagues Andy Strominger of Harvard and Malcolm Perry of Cambridge has shown us the mechanism for information retrieval from a black hole.”

You could even get out of a black hole, at least in principle. Limits can always be transcended.

Dr. Hawking himself is proof enough.

He has long been confined to a wheelchair, yet raised three children, published the best-selling “A Brief History of Time,” lost his voice to a tracheotomy, divorced, remarried, divorced again. He has become something of a pop icon. Last week, he called Donald J. Trump a “demagogue.”

He has survived several pneumonia episodes. Prior to his appearance in Boston, he arrived in New York on a Swiss ambulance airplane with a retinue that includes nurses and an IT expert to keep his computer and voice synthesizer working. His intellect is perhaps exceeded only by his stubbornness.

Dr. Hawking and his colleagues worked in a hotel by day and were feted at night, including a party at the home of the media baron Rupert Murdoch.

The considerable expense was covered by Yuri Milner, a Russian philanthropist and entrepreneur, who wanted Dr. Hawking on hand to help announce a new project to see if we can fly iPhone-like spaceships to Alpha Centauri, the nearest star.

“What makes humans unique?” Dr. Hawking asked rhetorically during the ceremony atop One World Center. “Gravity keeps us down, but I flew here on an airplane. I lost my voice, but I can speak through a voice synthesizer.”

“How do we transcend these limits?” he went on. “With our minds and our machines.

Aiki Cosmology and What it Means (The Overture)

Ueshiba Morihei explicitly and repeatedly  explained exactly what Aiki was and how it functions.  So why is it that people don’t all see, know, agree, or use, that which he so often talked about?
The answer that is commonly given is that his method of delivery was at fault.  Many individuals present at his lectures said that they couldn’t begin to penetrate his “psychobabble.”  Then there are others, coming primarily after Ueshiba’s passing, that researched, studied and attempted to explain what the original meaning behind Ueshiba’s vocabulary.  The trouble with this approach is that Ueshiba’s vocabulary was jargon  (special words or expressions that are used by a particular profession or group and are difficult for others to understand.) consisting of classical metaphors, but there are also metaphors that he seems to have created himself.  So, knowing the original meaning of his vocabulary does not lead to the understanding of his jargon.  The outcome of that approach was a furtherance of academic knowledge, but that knowledge produced no physical replication of the primary attributes of Aiki.

COMMON AIKI TRAITS:

SEEMINGLY INEXPLICABLE STRENGTH OR STABILITY

[STRENGTH AND/OR STABILITY WELL BEYOND THAT NORMALLY ATTRIBUTABLE TO AN INDIVIDUAL’S PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT OR STATURE.]

THE ABILITY TO NEGATE THE POWER OF OTHERS UPON CONTACT WITHOUT DIMINISHING ONE’S ABILITY TO EXPRESS ONE’S OWN POWER

[THE ABILITY TO NEGATE THE POWER OF OTHERS UPON CONTACT BY NO APPARENT TECHNICAL, TACTICAL, OR STRENGTH MEANS.  WHILE RETAINING THE ABILITY TO APPLY “INEXPLICABLE” POWER ONE’S SELF.]

NOTE THAT THESE AIKI TRAITS ARE NOT A DESCRIPTION OF:

Common Non-Aiki Traits:

  1. GETTING OFF THE LINE OF ATTACK (TECHNICAL) AND LEADING (TACTICAL)
  2. PAIN COMPLIANCE DUE TO THE APPLICATION OF A TECHNIQUE (TECHNICAL)
  3. A THROW DUE TO THE APPLICATION LEVERAGE (TECHNICAL)
  4. A PRODUCT OF SUPERIOR TIMING (TECHNICAL)
  5. A PRODUCT OF SUPERIOR MASS, ATHLETICISM, AND/OR RESISTIVE STRENGTH

NOR DO ANY OF THE AIKI TRAITS REQUIRE ANY COLLABORATION OR COLLUSION ON THE PART OF PARTICIPANTS.  IN FACT, THE AIKI TRAITS REMAIN PRESENT IN AN INDIVIDUAL REGARDLESS OF WHAT OTHERS DO, OR DO NOT DO. ALL OF THE NON-AIKI TRAITS MENTIONED ARE “CONVENTIONAL MEANS” WHICH CAN BE “MAGICAL,” AND DESIRABLE.  BUT THEY ARE NOT AIKI.

There are of course others that “explain” Ueshiba’s words, but usually they are explaining artfully rendered, politically motivated, or simple gloss translations of Ueshiba based upon personal interpretation.  It is no surprise that these too, while often motivating or moving, do not lead the to the aforementioned attributes either.
Ueshiba didn’t become well known, recognized, and admired by top military officers and martial artists because he was motivational.  He didn’t become well known, recognized and admired because he came up with the (not so) “novel” idea of getting out of the way of an attack, applying pain through a technique, throwing people via leverage, or due to his superior timing, techniques and/or athleticism.  He did became well known and admired because those around him recognized the attributes he possessed and demonstrated were beyond the norm.  They recognized and admired the attributes of Aiki, and they wanted  a piece of that action!
BUT THERE WAS, AND IS, A CATCH . . . (OF COURSE THERE IS A CATCH! THERE IS ALWAYS A CATCH! AFTER ALL, HOW MANY PEOPLE DO WE SEE DEMONSTRATING THE TRAITS OF TRUE AIKI?)

The insurmountable obstacle assuring the secrecy of Aiki was, and is, that one cannot ever fully understand any metaphor used to describe Aiki without already knowing its referent, Aiki.  In other words, if one has Aiki sufficient that one is noticeably strong/stable/powerful (beyond that of an athlete of equal or greater, stature and conventional training), and has the ability to negate the power of another’s force on contact by no visible means while retaining the ability to produce power one’s self, one very likely will recognize the meanings behind the metaphor’s that Ueshiba, or any other individual, uses to explain Aiki.  And one will likely use metaphors one’s self to to explain Aiki.  BUT, unless one is sufficiently, purposefully and intentionally taught and trained by one already in possession of the attributes of Aiki, one will very likely never attain those attributes one’s self, nor will one fully understand the metaphors used to explicate those traits.
It is about as likely as a 16th century craftsman “figuring out” how to build a 21st century computer.  The 21st century computer isn’t the product of a single individual.  It is the product of many individual’s discoveries amassed over time.  When one reads an esoteric Buddhist manual, a Taichi Classic, or the explanations of one accomplished in Aiki, it is a bit like handing a 16th century craftsman the schematic for building a 21st century computer.  The schematic alone is abstruse, but even if it came with detailed instructions one would be hard pressed to make the fullest use of it.
I am not saying that we cannot understand anything I am about to write about.  What I am saying is that we cannot fully understand what I am about to write about until we can fully do Aiki.
Basically this rules me out of fully understanding everything I am about to write about!  (You’ve been warned!) But I will add that I am in good company;  Ueshiba, Sagawa, and pretty much every other “Aiki God” that existed, or exists, ALL recognize(d) that they too hadn’t/haven’t fully embodied Aiki and therefore cannot, and do not, fully understand all there is to know.

“ONE CAN ALWAYS DO LESS!” ~ SAGAWA

“THIS OLD MAN HAS TO LEARN, AND LEARN!” ~ UESHIBA

There is a continuum of understanding, starting with those that cannot exhibit no Aiki traits to those that (theoretically) exhibit only Aiki traits.  Obviously some are closer to the “only” end of the spectrum and most are closer to the “no” end of the spectrum.
“You take the blue pill, the story ends. You wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.”
Ueshiba tended to describe Aiki in a favored way at different times of his life.*  For example, in his earlier years of  of teaching he would often quote Hogen Kiichi’s teaching from the Tora no Maki.  In his later years, he was given to much broader and more universal explanations. Nevertheless, at any time, Ueshiba’s teaching would follow a predictable pattern. From that one pattern he would then often “riff,” basically repeating the same primary pattern or bits of the same pattern, in different metaphorical ways.
iki
Ueshiba expressed the pattern using Shinto terminology and indeed the pattern is taught in (varying lineages) of Shinto.  While the pattern he used is not specifically Chinese cosmology, it directly mirrors Chinese cosmology.  Similarly, while the pattern he used is not specifically Shingon Mikkyo, it directly mirrors Shingon Mikkyo.

That pattern is as follows:
Mu
Ichi Rei 一霊
Ni Ki
San Gen 三元
Shi Kon 四魂
Hachi Riki 八力
Some renditions of this pattern do not include the “Mu” section or the “Ni Ki” section.  Here I have chosen to use the most comprehensive version.  There are, of course, other numerical descriptions related to Aiki such as Roppo (six directions), but these are not typically included in (although they are understood to be a component of) the model above.
Blank.jpg
Next, I will translate the pattern into English, and then begin to describe each section briefly and how they relate to Aiki.  (I will take one or more pieces and look into them more deeply in subsequent blog posts rather than trying to be exhaustive here.  There is insufficient time in a week for me to create a blog post covering them all in depth.)
Emptiness
One Spirit
Two Ki’s
Three Sources
Four Souls
Eight Powers
Before we begin our journey into the meanings contained in this pattern let us first realize that this pattern was understood to be both Macro Cosmic and Micro Cosmic.  In other words, one could expect to find this pattern present both in the Universe itself and within each individual.
Blank.jpg
Mu/Emptiness:  This should not be mistaken for nihilism.  It refers to undifferentiated, un-born/un-ending, non-dualistic, absolute.  It is dropped in some usages of the pattern simply because it is recognized as being ineffable so therefore it is “implied,” or “understood” rather than “named.”  At a human or binary level of understanding, while this points to ultimate, undifferentiated, non-dualistic and absolute unity of identity, it is not that identity because identity itself, the fact of being who or what a person or thing is,  is a dualist construct. As humans we symbolize Mu/Emptiness as “0.”
Blank.jpg
Ichi Rei/One Spirit:  Singularity.  This indicates the “I,” or identity of the Universe (One Word) and, at the human leve,l the “I” of the self.  In Aiki it is how one ultimately should function, “as One.”  Dan Harden likes to say, “One thing moves, everything moves.”  Ueshiba was known for saying, “I am the Universe.”  Let’s call this “1.”  1 + 0 = 1
Blank.jpg
Ni Ki/Two Ki’s:  In/Yo or Yin/Yang are dual opposing, mutually arising, opposites.  In order to have an up, there must be a down.  In order to have an in, there must be an out.  Ni Ki are two Ki’s (Force/Energy/Spirit) that exist in a dual opposing, mutually arising relationship.  In the macrocosm this refers to the dualistic nature of our reality.  In the microcosm, this refers to actual, and specific, dual opposing, mutually arising opposite Ki’s (Force/Energy/Spirit – Force has vector, Energy has magnitude, and Spirit has consciousness.  In this case, Ki contains attributes of all of these.)  For example, our bones best convey force in compression and our soft tissue best convey force in tension.  Putting our bones and tissues in this relationship requires conscious effort (intent), doing this vectors forces. Let’ call one Ki 1/2 and the other -1/2.  1/2 + -1/2 = 0, 1 + 0 = 1
Blank.jpgBlank.jpg
San Gen/Three Origins:  Along with In/Yo this is probably one of the most common references used by Ueshiba and others.  It refers to the a specific relationship between TEN 天 – CHI 地 – JIN 人, or “Heaven,” “Earth,” and “Man.”  Heaven specifically refers to the force of gravity or probably more accurately the observed “Down Force.”  Earth specifically refers tot he force  conveyed by the solidity of the Earth or “Up Force.”  In reference to the example given above, bones (in compression) convey “Up Force” or Earth.  The tissues (in tension) convey “Down Force” or Heaven.  Man refers to the “force” of consciousness and more specifically to the force of intent that manipulates the other forces in a In/Yo manner.  These are also referred to as Iku-Tama, Taru-Tama, and Tarutamaru-Tama.  Here, Tama means Soul.  These are the four visible souls of the Mitsudama.  Let’s call Heaven +1/2, Earth -1/2 and Man 0, 1/2 + -1/2 + 0 = 0, 1 + 0 = 1
Blank.jpg
Shi Kon/Four Souls:    According to an esoteric Shinto model, each human possesses one spirit (Ichi Rei) comprised of four souls.
“According to a high-priest deeply versed in esotericism, but whose views are probably not shared by a majority of authorities on Shinto, they could be presented as follows [shown above], within the philosophy of ichi-rei-shi-kon, “the four souls under one controlling spirit:
with a correspondence between ara-mitama and kushi-mitama on the one hand, and nigi- mitama and saki-mitamaon the other.
Within this context, are ‘implies the function’ of art (to appear to the outer world0; nigi the function of nigiru (to consolidate the inner world0, saki the function of saku 9to split, to analyze, to differentiate), and sushi the function of sushi (to pierce, to penetrate, to centralize.)”  Herbert, Jean. Shinto – The Fountainhead of Japan. New York: Stein and Day, 1967. Print
These are Kushi-Mitama 奇御魂, Saki-Mitama 幸御魂, Ara-Mitama 荒御魂, and Nigi-Mitama 和御魂.  Kushi-Mitama 奇御魂 is a “spirit that causes mysterious transformations” and Saki-Mitama 幸御魂 is a “spirit that imparts blessings.” These two souls are “what does variously generate the mind, the spiritual spring of the inner invisible world.”  Ara-Mitama 荒御魂 is a “spirit empowered to rule with authority,” and Nigi-Mitama 和御魂 is a “spirit empowered to bring bring union and harmony”  These two souls are what does generate the body, the invisible root of the outer visible world.”So these shikon can be portrayed as two perpendicular, dual opposing sets of opposites that form a cross “+” of Heaven/Earth, Fire/Water. Let’s call Heaven 1/4, Earth -1/4, Fire 1/4, and Water -1/4.  Add them all up and it equals 0.  0 + 1 = 1
They meet at 90º orthogonally and for two axis.  From the combination of each of these four forces meeting without resistance, for new force vectors are formed creating 8.
Blank.jpg
Hachi Riki, Eight Powers:  These are four sets of powers in In/Yo relationships.  [I may not have placed the eight power pairs properly on the above chart.]
They are:
Movement – Stillness
Melting – Congealing
Pulling – Loosening
Combining – Splitting
Again, 1/8 + -1/8 + 1/8 + -1/8 = 0, 0 + 1 = 1

AT THIS POINT MIGHT UNDERSTANDABLY ASK AT THIS TIME, “SO WHAT?”

There is a very clear answer to this question:  Ueshiba Morihei, arguably the most thoroughly trained practitioner/instructor of Daito Ryu and founder of Aikido, used this pattern as an explanation of what Aiki is, repeatedly.  Clearly this was important to him, and, while he was intelligent enough modify his speech to his audiences, he chose to use this same pattern (or an equitable variation) to explain Aiki. Many had the opportunity to try to figure out what was being said, although without further explanation and an adequate amount of guidance, correction, and experience, the odds were, and are, astronomically against one “figuring it out on one’s own.” Most in the position to receive this instruction confess that they simply waited for the “old man” to stop talking so that they could get the “blood back into their legs,” and start “real training.”
一霊四魂三元八力や呼吸、合気の理解なくして合気道を稽古しても合気道の本当の力は出てこないだろう。」
“I think that if you cannot understand Ichirei Shikon Sangen Hachiriki, breath (kokyu) and Aiki, then even if you practice Aikido the true power of Aikido will not come forth.”
~ Ueshiba Morihei
It is also very clear where that “real training,” which quickly turned into the “real teaching” got the majority of people “really training” today:  Right around the “no” end of the Aiki traits spectrum.  The “no” end of the Aiki traits spectrum stands in stark contrast, all of the testimony given by those lucky enough to have felt individuals closer to the “only” end of the Aiki traits spectrum.  These individuals were left with the indelible realization that “this is something completely different.”  Ueshiba, and Sagawa’s descriptions of Aiki align with both each other (even though there was no great affection  between the two) and they align with others noted for being “completely different.”
Ueshiba uses the model above to try to communicate what that “something completely different” is.  I suggest listening and studying what he had to say.  Comparing that to what others, noted for being completely different, had to say, and then try to find one of the few individuals in the world that is “completely different” and try to combine the experience of our interaction with them, their words, the words of the past, and our experience, until we too are “something completely different.
For my part, after great effort, I was able to read O-sensei’s writings towards the end of the 80’s and was lucky enough to have acquired copies of writings that were not widely published.  At that time, I understood a bit.  My teacher Shirata Rinjiro was both explicit and systematic in his instruction.  With his help, I understood a little more.  When I met Dan Harden, he too was both explicit and systematic in his instruction.  At that time I understood more still . . . but still fell short of the goal.
At a certain point I felt like a two time looser  I had two sincere and talented teachers, both of whom were definitely on the Aiki spectrum (one living, one dead), trying hard to teach me.  And I was barely off of the “no” end of the Aiki trait spectrum. Which, to my mind at the time, meant that any failure was all on me!  Thankfully, neither of these gentlemen saw it that way.  And with the invaluable help (not the compliance, cooperation, or obedience – but the deep thinking, perseverance, sincerity, stubbornness and support ) of my friends/training partners/students I began to gain the necessary development, and experience that led to my present understanding.  What I realized each time, was that what my teachers had told me was true . . . literally.  I just didn’t know until I knew.  Of course I continue to develop, experience, progress and further understand what I have already been taught.
In the next blog posts I will “unpack” piece by piece what each part of the pattern means in practical terms, knowing that no matter how seriously one practices, understanding only comes with time and experience.  It is a bit like someone describing a taste to you.  You understand their descriptions, but only until you taste the thing yourself do you truly understand what they were verbally trying to describe.

Here's the trick to removing 'like' and 'um' from your vocabulary

public speaking
Recently I attended a training course in New York City and at the start of the course each of us introduced ourselves.
The senior executive sitting next to me said, and I quote, "I, like, work for a big bank, like, Citibank. I work, um, in technology, and head-up a group of like, 500 people, right. I do, like, technology risk assessment, right, and create, um, processes, to, like, reduce risk, right."
I was shocked.

"Like," "Um," and "Ah" are credibility killers

He was a business professional, a senior director at a major organization, and yet he sounded more like a valley girl. His speech was so infected with "like," "right," and "um" that the message was muddled and he significantly diminished his credibility.
These "credibility killers” — fluency disruptions — communicate doubt, especially at the end of a phrase. When he was talking, I found myself thinking, "Doesn't he know how exactly many people work for him? Does he work for Citibank, or does he really work somewhere else?"

What are disfluencies?

Disfluencies, in general, weaken messages. They’re distracting for your listeners and they make you sound bad.
In the first 30 seconds I counted four "likes" and three "rights" and two "ums." Worse, I'm certain that Tom had no idea that his speech was infected with these verbal viruses. In his defense, credibility killers (e.g. like, so, you know, right, uh, ah) are actually really common in everyday conversation. Researchers say that about 20% of “words” in everyday conversation are disfluencies.
In fact, people around the world fill pauses in their own way. In Britain they say "uh," Hebrew speakers say "ehhh," the Turks say "mmmmm." The Japanese say "eto" (eh-to) and "ano" (ah-no), Spanish speakers "esto," and Mandarin speakers "neige" (NEH-guh) and "jiege" (JEH-guh). In Dutch and German it's "uh, um, mmm." In Swedish it’s "eh, ah, aah, m, mm, hmm, ooh, a and oh" (man, this is starting to sound x-rated podcast, I'd better stop, I think you have the idea!)
As a communication coach, I notice disfluencies the most when people are nervous; for some people it's the only time these little buggers show up.
So today's article is about what can you do to boost your immunity to these viruses. Its about how you can reduce disfluencies. Notice I didn’t say get rid of them all together. Reduction, versus complete elimination, should be your goal.
The first and most important step towards more fluent speaking is to become aware of your distracting speech habits. The fastest way to find out if you have trouble in this area is to ask a close trusted friend (or public speaking coach, hint, hint).
Anyway, perhaps the BEST way is to record yourself. If you are comfortable with technology I suggest using free audio editing software (Garageband on mac and Audacity for PC). With this software you actually see your words in audio format. For a more simplistic solution try Utterz.com — you can just call a phone number and it will record your voice.
Once you’ve got some sample recordings, the next step is play back your recordings several times. Listen specifically for your disfluences — go ahead and make of game of it. First just list them and then start counting them. If you are counting past three or four, you’ll know you have a problem.

Focus on listening to yourself talk

If recording seems like too much effort, just focus, for one full week, on listening, really listening carefully for distracters when you talk. Some experts like to suggest you put tiny “um” and “ah” stickers on your computer or cell phone to remind you to be listening.
Trust me, after a week of listening, or recording and listening, you'll have become acutely aware of your specific problems. And that’s exactly what you need; awareness. You need to be able to hear your disfluencies in your mind before you blurt them out.

How to reduce your credibility killers

If you've done your homework you'll know when one of your credibility killers is just about to escape from your mouth. Then, all you'll need to do is to keep quiet. I know, easier said than done. At first you’ll have awkward pauses in your speech, but that’s still better, actually far better, than speech peppered with "likes" and "ums." Eventually the pauses get shorter. With time, you'll be more fluent and have fewer "ums" and "ahs."
So the next time you introduce yourself, be warned, somebody sitting next to you might just be counting your "ums", "ahs," and "you knows". Don't let your disfluencies kill your credibility. It really is worth it to take some time to focus on this. It can make a big difference in how you're perceived.

17 Things To Let Go Of In 2017

1.

Let go of the belief that you have to have everything figured out right now. That you have to know exactly who you want to be, exactly what you want to do, exactly who you want to have a life with. Be okay with the fact that you’re going to go through life feeling blind and unsteady and never fully sure of what you’re doing, because that’s how it’s supposed to be.

2.

Let go of the idea that people are either 100% good or 100% bad. Focus on learning as much as you can about a person, about their past and their present and their struggles and their pain, before you succumb to the human instinct of instant judgement.

3.

Let go of your hatred of your body. Understand that it’s okay to want to be healthy, to want to be proud of your body, and to want to look good and feel well. But also understand that you are only mortal, that there will always be something that you don’t like about yourself, and that it’s more of a journey of figuring out how to love yourself anyway than it is about ‘fixing’ what you are convinced is wrong with you.

4.

Let go of your anger towards the friends who have hurt you but have also repeatedly tried to make it up to you. Forgive them, bring them back into your life, and watch how much happier and lighter you are because of it.

5.

Let go of friends who don’t put effort into your relationship. It doesn’t have to be a fight, or a dramatic, official goodbye. But let go of the energy that you spend on them that never gets returned. Come to peace with it, and with them. Be okay with the fact that you can still love them while also letting them go, in order to make room for the friends who always meet you halfway.

6.

Let go of the idea that you must be right all the time. You’re human and you make mistakes and sometimes you’re wrong and that’s okay, as long as you own up to it.

7.

Let go of your belief that it’s too late to start the career that you actually want. It is never too late.

8.

Let go of people who make you feel like you have to change in order to be loved by them.

9.

Let go of your passivity, of the tendency to watch life as it happens to you instead of taking charge of it yourself. Stop convincing yourself that you don’t have that much control over your life, that this is the job you’re stuck with or this is the city you’re stuck with or this is the partner you’re stuck with and you just have to deal with it, even if it makes you unhappy. Decide for yourself that you are powerful enough to change things, then start small and don’t stop.

10.

Let go of the idea that anxiety or depression are things to be ashamed about. Be kind to yourself, get the help you need and deserve, and understand that you are not alone.

11.

Let go of the pressure you put on yourself to be perfect. Embrace your flaws, embrace your screwups, embrace all the reasons why you are not perfect and figure out the numerous ways that they actually make you stronger.

12.

Let go of bitterness over tiny things – traffic, loud people on the train, an annoying coworker. Stop letting the little things ruin your day. They can become pretty powerful, if you let them.

13.

Let go of mediocrity, of any tendency you have to not give it your all. Don’t be a mediocre friend, a mediocre employee, a mediocre partner. Don’t feel mediocre about your job and don’t feel mediocre about the things you spend your time on outside of your job. Work towards greatness, in everything that you do. It doesn’t mean you have to be great at everything all the time, but you have to at least aim for it.

14.

Let go of negative self-talk. Of telling yourself that you’re not good enough or you’re not successful enough or that you are undeserving of love. You will probably never fully get to this point, of being truly immune to negative self-talk. But you can certainly make a dent in decreasing it, and in making a conscious effort to be more kind and loving towards yourself.

15.

Let go of wasting stupid amounts of money on things that are not worth it or things you don’t care about.

16.

Let go of the loud world you let yourself live in, with constant notifications and noise and scrolling and liking and sharing and clicking. Let yourself have some peace, or even just a moment to live in your own mind and to listen to your own thoughts, without someone or something trying to steal your attention.

17.

Let go of toxic thoughts, toxic things, toxic people, your own toxic behavior. Focus on being kind, on putting more goodness into the world, on giving and loving and making other people happy and relishing in how happy that makes you in return. Spread love and spread light.
